Google Chrome--no thanks!

I have neglected this blog for years, but wanted to revive it, as part of my little "halfalert" universe. Apparently if I don't use Google Chrome, I won't be able to edit the blog--or I will be troubleshooting problems due to browser incompatibilities, who knows? Here is Google's popup/banner warning:

"Your browser is no longer supported by Blogger. Some parts of Blogger will not work and you may experience problems. If you are having problems, try Google Chrome."

My reply:
Sorry Google, I'm using Firefox 11 and the up-to-date halfalert site is on Wordpress.
Good night "Blogger".
Stay safe everbody...

Space Program Snippets

Recently NASA announced that astronauts were drinking, and may have been slightly drunk during shuttle missions. Should that be a surprise? About 1 in 100 flights ends in total death and destruction. Also, just look at this ad from 1966, when we were racing the Russians to be first on the moon. The pressure must have been incredible.

Wait a minute--isn't Smirnoff Russian?

Illiana Nostalgia

I found this postcard of Lakeview Hospital in a San Diego antique store, buried in several hundred cards featuring motels (plenty of knotty pine) and photos of long gone buildings.

Opening Shot--this blog is about information.

"Half a lert is better than no lert at all!"

Sorting through today's news can be daunting--and disheartening. "Facts" can be more entertaining and less believable than fiction. Identifying facts is the hard part!

The "lowest hanging fruit" for de-bunking is the self contradiction.

SCIENCE & CONSERVATIVE POLITICS
A study in self-contradiction

Consider the ultra-right wing animus toward belief in global warming or evolution*. They dismiss the credibility of scientists and the scientific method. However, if they are wrong, they ultimately are placing faith in the very science they disdain--that is, that science will find a solution, cure, or other remedy for each situation that might threaten mankind.

*As a side note, the conservatives are very much in favor of a "winner take all" game of life, where survival of the fittest is not only the rule, but the best way to ensure that humanity survives and thrives.
